"It's A Rather Brilliant Fairytale" SFX Interview
Matt is featured in the latest issue of SFX and on the front in a special 3D cover! There’s an all-new interview with Matt Smith in the latest issue of SFX, and here’s just a taster for you…SFX: What can you tell us about your first story?
“I think there’s a magic to it. Steven has written a rather brilliant fairytale, in such a magical way. The Doctor’s getting to know his new body, which is just brilliant, all the great stuff that Steven’s done with that. What’s interesting about this particular series is that it has a thread twining through it. And you learn about that in episode one. And the Doctor’s scoping it out. It’s quite important for the rest of the tale.”
The new issue of SFX is on Sale Wednesday 10 March.
Didn’t you know? 3D is the future of cinema! OK maybe not but when done well it can improve the experience no end. So we applied that principle to the latest cover of SFX and, wouldn’t you know it, we think that Cameron chap’s on to something, because our world exclusive photo shoot with the latest Doctor and Companion – Matt Smith and Karen Gillan – has resulted in one of our best covers in (almost) 15 years. Best of all, it’s lenticular so you don’t have to wear any goofy glasses to bask in it’s glorious poky sonic screwdriver action. You can even read a behind-the-scenes snippet about the photo shoot in our huge 10 page Who blowout.
Note: because our new cover is brilliant enough already there won’t be any coverline free copies for subscribers this time, sorry.
Doctor Who reborn
Returning for it’s first full series in over two years to say we’re a little bit excited about the debut of Doctor Eleven Matt Smith, new Companion Karen Gillan and newly appointed head writer Steven Moffat would be and understatement of timeless proportions. The only thing for it? An enormous, 10-page on set exclusive from the new series, packed with insights and secrets from Who maestro Moffat.

Matt Interviewed In Esquire
MATT SMITH ON BEING DESTINED TO PLAY DR WHO AND WHY THE TIME LORD IS A CRAP LOVERMatt Smith, the youngest ever actor to assume the role of Doctor Who, talks to Esquire about being destined to play a 903-year-old alien Time Lord and why Dr Who makes a crap lover. On being destined to play Dr Who: “At university I had a big coloured scarf, and people would often say ‘Alright, Dr Who?’ And I thought, I rather liked the notion.” On auditioning for the role of a Time Lord: “It has to be your version. I tried to be creative and artistic, and silly, and crazy, and also the cleverest man in the world, and part of that is there’s a rapidity to the way he speaks. He’s an intergalactic genius, a superhero-ish, mad, fumbling, bumbling, science geek. He’s everything you can pluck from any universe and put into him.” On why Dr Who makes a crap lover: “It’s because he’s to busy. He’s an addict – if he stopped saving the world, he’d be in real trouble.” On his pro-football career ending before it began: “I remember crying because it was all I’d ever invested in. I hadn’t really considered acting.”

It was just a really, really good audition. More than good acting – they were all good actors – he just had the tone of it straight away, the fun of it, the nuttiness of it… the unselfconscious nuttiness of it. Because, let’s be honest, Matt is unselfconsciously nutty. That’s what he’s like…”
